By 2030 the Australian Renewable Energy Council forecasts that 49 per cent of new vehicles purchased will be hybrids or full electric. The organisation's forecasts also state that in 2040 all new vehicle purchases will be electric vehicles (EVs).

We're at the crest of a wave and Australia and the world are about to be flooded with incredibly fuel efficient, slightly futuristic EVs. Here are three of the most exciting EVs slated for a 2019 release here in Australia.

Honda Urban EV

In September 2017, at a German motor show, Honda unveiled a quirky and playful concept car that quickly became the people's favourite. Its cute, modern-retro design, electric powertrain and attractive but futuristic interior became world famous within months.

Prompted by the emphatic response to the vehicle, Honda announced it would go into production and be available for purchase in Europe from early 2019. There's no word yet as to an Australian release date, but we've got our fingers crossed for 2019.

We love this car's approachable 70s-esque design, the panoramic screen that spans the entire dashboard and couch-like front seat, and can't wait to get behind the wheel of one.

Mercedes-Benz EQC

Mercedes-Benz reportedly plans to flood the EV market with several electric-only offerings over the next five years. The first is the Mercedes Benz EQC. This spacious SUV boasts a similar design to the GLC, albeit with a slightly more futuristic feel.

It will reportedly cover 450 km per charge, accelerate from 0-100 kph in 5.1 seconds and pack over 400 horsepower. Upon its release in 2019 this will most likely be the most luxurious EV ever made.

Jaguar I-Pace

Jaguar was the first major marque to produce a luxury SUV, and the manufacturer's offering is a thing of beauty. The Jaguar I-Pace is slightly less powerful than the Mercedes Benz EQC but it's also lighter and faster, whipping from 0-100 kph in just 4.5 seconds. For context, that's 0.1 seconds faster than a Porsche 911 Carrera.

This high-tech beast also comes with three onboard touch screens, a premium Meridian sound system and an impressive range of almost 500 km. It's available for test drive now and purchase soon.
